Caroline Brewer

Caroline Brewer is a national literacy consultant who has helped children and teens accelerate their skills, overcome deep fears, and win tens of thousands of dollars in college scholarships. She has helped teachers find new energy, joy, and confidence in teaching. She’s an award-winning children’s book author, artist, environmentalist, and literacy consultant, and the creator of Nature-Wise, a professional development training for teachers and a student-engagement program that blends literacy, outdoor exploration, and oneness with nature. In a bid for high levels of transformation, Caroline helps students express themselves in creative and powerful ways through handmade and commercially available books they write.

Caroline is the author and illustrator of the new, award-winning picture book Harriet Tubman, Force of Nature: A Biography in Poems — a meditation on Harriet’s legacy of oneness with nature, and how she used it to free herself and more than 70 others on the Underground Railroad. Water, air, soil, plants, animals, the sun, moon, and stars were abiding sources of inspiration, celebration, and sustenance. Nature played a decisive role in how Harriet saw herself: born as free as the eagle. Expressed in 30 poems with captivating, uniquely-styled collage illustrations, there’s never been a children’s biography of our beloved Harriet quite like this.

Caroline is the author of the new (August 22, 2026) original folktale, Anansi and the Talking Cloth (with consulting by Master Weaver Kwasi Asare and illustrated by Caldecott Honor Winner Ekua Holmes). Kente, community, conflict, proverbs, peace, and power play strong roles in how the story unfolds. Anansi and the Talking Cloth is a book for all ages, perfect for the times we are living in today!

The award-winning Say Their Names is also an original work of Caroline’s. Say Their Names is a picture book that offers a journey of healing and community engagement in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder. Say Their Names shows young people how to live up to Dr. King’s call to know their dignity, worth, and “somebodiness.”

A storyteller across many rooms

Caroline is the former Director of Communications for Nature Forward, a former Director of Communications for the Brady Campaign, and former Chairwoman of Nature Forward’s Taking Nature Black Conference. A former Pulitzer Prize–nominated journalist and juror, she brings decades of storytelling experience as a journalist, children’s book author, and public relations professional — work that has touched national celebrities, members of Congress, the Obama White House, and grassroots organizations.

Across all of it runs a single thread: a belief in remarkable outcomes through relationships. In the case of primary education, Caroline has witnessed, over and over, that every child can accelerate reading, writing, and speaking skills when we meet them with rhythm, rhyme, joy, patience, and high expectations. All of Caroline’s picture books rhyme, because rhyme is a superpower — it builds memory, vocabulary, and confidence faster than any other reading technique.
